Meet the Creator of Unleashing Greatness
Unleashing Greatness began with a question that has shaped my entire life and career: How can we inspire young people to believe in their own brilliance and potential—especially in a world that too often underestimates them?
As an author, educator, and father, I have spent decades working to close the opportunity gap and uplift students through storytelling, creativity, and rigorous learning experiences.
I created Unleashing Greatness to bring together the power of an unforgettable adventure with the science of learning—to give students an engaging way to build literacy, social-emotional skills, and cultural confidence.
Why This Work Matters
Today, nearly 80% of African American students are not reading proficiently by fourth or eighth grade. And across all communities, the majority of students in the U.S. are reading below grade level.
I believe we can—and must—do better.
Unleashing Greatness is my contribution to this challenge: a curriculum that doesn’t just align to reading standards, but uses immersive storytelling to help students see themselves as capable, curious learners.
Because the science of learning tells us that when children feel connected to the material, and when their culture and identity are respected, real growth happens.

Robert G. Waugh is a multifaceted author and educator whose work blends storytelling, emotional growth, and cultural empowerment. His latest novel, Unleashing Greatness: The Kingdom of Shadows, reimagines children’s fantasy literature—combining African-inspired science and geography with an epic adventure that captivates readers of all backgrounds.
With over four decades of leadership experience—as a military intelligence veteran, corporate vice president, educator, counselor, business consultant, and game designer—he brings unmatched depth to his work. His understanding of educational systems, social services, and the cultural realities of urban youth informs every page.
A devoted husband and proud father of three accomplished African American sons, Robert is committed to creating literature and learning experiences that uplift, educate, and inspire the next generation of young heroes.
